On the Waterfront

So many great names of Street Photography have gravitated to the seaside to capture with charm and humour, scenes of people indulging in their leisure activities. From Tony Ray-Jones to Martin Parr and Elliott Erwitt, a new sub-genre has developed, moving away from the grit and tarmac of city-centres out to the relative calm of sand and surf.

Whether on holiday or not, any street photographer worthy of the name, will always pack a camera in the beach bag, and I am no different. Aside from the witty pictures I am also drawn to the quality of light, the open spaces and the structure of the horizon line, which offer so much at the water’s edge.
